NaNoWriMo Write In #2
Come join us at the Hazleton Area Public Library as we celebrate National Novel Writing Month. If you're ready to write your story, we're here to keep you motivated. HAPL will be hosting two Write Ins for those of you daring enough to participate in this challenge. The second Write In is this Wednesday, Nov 14th from 6:00-7:30. Come ready to write, bring your laptop or a pen and pad. We will have snacks and refreshments available to refuel your body; writing exercises, prompts, and word-nerd books for creative inspiration. Register at the Reference desk or by calling 570-454-2961. Write Ins will take place in the Community Room; enter through the Green Street entrance. Keep in mind you can come write with us anytime during regular business hours, we have Wi-Fi and public computers.
Throwback Thursday Films
Beginning in November, the Hazleton Area Public Library will be screening a classic film, one Thursday evening, every month. The first film will be shown this Thursday, November 15th at 6:00 in the Community Room (Green Street Entrance). Program attendees should enter through those doors. Registrations for the film programs are not required. In the event of bad weather, please look for closings, delays and program schedule changes on the library’s website, Facebook page, or call the library at 570-454-2961. Light refreshments and popcorn will be provided at every film program. To learn the title of the film the library will be screening, phone the reference department at 570-454-2961.
Do you have a story to tell, a poem in your heart, or a message you'd like to share through the art of writing? Everyone is capable of being a writer, all that's required is putting pen to paper. All genres-fiction, poetry, memoir, etc. - and any experience level welcome; even if you don't consider yourself a writer. Workshops can be an encouraging place to explore your creativity and receive much needed support and feedback. The workshop will take place in the Community Room this Saturday, November 17th, from 1:00-2:30. This program is intended for Adults and teens 16+. Stop in and register at the Reference desk or call (570) 454-2961. Pen and paper will be available if needed, just bring yourself and your imagination.
Dan Urban: Grow Up Already
The Hazleton Area Public Library will host a book reading and signing with local author Daniel Urban on Wednesday Nov 28th at 5:30 in the community room (Green Street entrance). Those attending the program should enter through those doors. The focus of the evening will be on Urban's first book, "Grow Up Already". A fictional account of the protagonist's life, Theodore Graham a burned out genius with working class roots, who challenges the status quo of wealth, power, and the media, only to find himself as an unlikely candidate in a tight governor's race. This political comedy examines friendships and societal struggles through witty dialogue and character interactions. Daniel Urban grew up in Coaldale, PA. He attended Penn State University and received his B.A. in Communications. After college, Urban returned home where he worked a multitude of jobs and served as a volunteer firefighter, scout leader, labor union leader, and participated in numerous community beautification projects. It was the triumphs, tragedies, struggles, resilience, and humor of the people Urban had the privilege of getting to know, that inspired him to become a writer. A.G. Shraud Book Reading & Signing – Believe
The Hazleton Area Public Library will host a program with author A. G. Shraud on Saturday December 1st from 2:00–4:00 in the Community Room (Green St. entrance). In her book titled Believe, A.G. Shraud reveals how she maintained her confidence and her determination when faced with obstacles. Daily journaling allowed her to hold in her mind the encouraging truths that drove her success. Reservations are required for this program, and may be placed by phoning the library reference desk at 570-454-2961.
Lap-sit Baby and Me
The next Lap-sit Program will take place on Thursday, November 15th at 10:30. The program is for children ages 6 months to 23 months. It involves stories, fingerplays, lap bounces, and songs. Registration is required, and can be made by contacting the library’s Children’s Department at 570-454-2961. Registration begins today.
On Monday, November 19th, the library will be offering a program for children in Kindergarten- 3rd grade from 6:00-7:00. Children will learn about different topics and concepts through stories, activities, playtime, and crafts. Registration is required, and can be made by contacting the library’s Children’s Department at 570-454-2961.
Teen Advisory Board
The Hazleton Area Public Library has some open spaces on our Teen Advisory Board. The board meets one Tuesday evening a month from 6:00-7:00. The board helps to plan future programs, brainstorm on how to reach out to the community, and give input on materials in the library’s Young Adult collection. Members will also have the opportunities to get volunteer hours. Board members must be high school students aged 14-18. Teens must complete an application in order to be considered for the board. Teen Time Gingerbread Houses
On Tuesday, November 27th, teens in grades 7-12 will create their own gingerbread houses and enter them into the library’s Gingerbread House competition. Teens can choose to build a house, cottage, castle, or whatever else you can imagine. Only gingerbread houses made during the program will be entered into the competition. Each teen’s unique creation will be on display to allow the public to vote for their favorite. The winner will be chosen on Tuesday, December 11th. The program goes from 6:00-7:00. On Saturday, November 17th, from 10:00-10:45, the library will hold a storytime that is designed to help children stay focused throughout the program. It is a great program for children with sensory processing disorders, autism, or other special needs. The materials are aimed at children aged 4-7, but ages may vary due to developmental delays. An adult MUST STAY with the child for the entire program. Registration is required and can be made by contacting the library's Children's Department at 570-454-2961.
Christmas Tea for Grown-up and Me
The Hazleton Area Public Library Children’s Department invites you to our annual Holiday Tea. Children ages 2 and up are invited to join us Wednesday, December 5th at 6:00 or Thursday, December 6th at 6:00 for holiday stories, songs, refreshments, and to help us welcome a very special guest.
