Fake News Program
Fake news has been a buzz word in real new outlets for the past year. During the program at the Hazleton Area Public Library on March 1 at 6:00, Kent Jackson, a reporter for the Standard-Speaker, will lead a discussion on what fake news is and isn't. Jackson will give examples of how fake news has real effects, from an attack on a pizza shop to attacks on journalists. Also, Jackson will question how fake news affects elections and policy making. After hearing how the Standard-Speaker and other news organizations check facts, the audience members will try determining whether reports are real, or fake. Jackson, who has been with the newspaper for 35 years, will highlight fact-checking websites and checklists for verifying information -- tools that can help everyone become a more skillful editor and a more discerning reader. Reservations are required, and can be placed by phoning HAPL’s Reference Department at 570-454-2961. Deadline for reservations is Monday, February 26th.
